Four Set Win Over River Clinches CWC For Lakewood

by Dr. Charles Greanoff –
Junior Ari Hueter was dominant tonight–the best player in the CWC hit, served and even dug well. But the story is about a Lakewood (12-0, 17-2) team that plays well together, always gives maximum effort, and as a result earned the Cleveland West Conference Championship outright. As if that isn’t enough, they clinched the title at rival Rocky River, the 2nd place team. The over the-bridge gang is always tough, and victories over them are always hard earned and savored.
Fellow junior Laine Sheehan, who is on the “Edge of Seventeen” (Birthday tomorrow) celebrated early with another fine all-around game. Middle Blockers Clio Burgoyne and Indigo Moncrief, as usual, had multiple kills and blocks. Setters Keira McKenna and Mia Dugan set up Ari, Laine and Alyssa Volcansek. Mia connected especially well with Ari, and Kiera set well and was very strong at the net. She also made key plays late in each game. Aliyah Plicka also subbed in and played well. Total team effort
But the match would not have been won without the play of Adi Hoy and Kara Laidley. Pressed in to duty as Libero, Adi was solid all night. Kara, who hasn’t seen much action all year, stepped into Adi’s normal spot and played like she’s been there all season. Kara also served especially well.
The best player in the conference did her thing and then some, but the efforts of Adi and Kara sum up the grit and determination of this championship team. If the plan doesn’t go well, if a starter is out, if the first two sets are lost, just dig in and fight. Bad play? Get the next one. You get the idea
Congratulations to Coach Spilker and the entire squad on an historic season, with more good things to come. The Rangers host Buckeye on Thursday, October 13th in the annual Senior Night game. I hope to see you there
The CWC Champion Lakewood Rangers are one team, from one town, that made history tonight.
Long Live Lakewood
